Using a MPH per 1000 RPM for a given tyre circumference spreadsheet I have calculated the speed values and ranges of each of the two gearbox's at 5000 rev's (peak torque) and there not a lot between them in real terms I have a set of RX Arb's and an as new (only 500 miles) set of Meister S coilovers to fit. Using a scangauge for absolute accuracy rather than relying on the inaccuracies of the analogue dials, the engine is reving at 3200rpm at 72mph with a UK spec six speed box and diff. The current car being what it is really makes any comparison irrelevant but the six speed box is the stronger unit and favoured by those who race/track their cars, for me it's certainly a comfort factor knowing that the six speed box can handle the additional power /torque also as with the standard car I find that all six gears do have their particular uses but in real life driving, backroad baltting around, I never need anything more that the first four gears, fifth and sixth are used more for A road and motorway cruising, even then I often feel that I could do with another gear just to drop the revs when cruising. Given that town use is limited to a max of 20 - 30mph, something that I'm not in the habit of breaing out of respect to pedestrians etc any 'in town' performance gains through gearing are irrelevant as both 5 and 6 speed cars on all marks will break the limit in first gear. Since then I've has two NCs both 2.0 MZR/Duratec engines with the six speed box, and although a torquier engine I still found that all six gears had their place and certainly kept it easy enough to keep it in the power band but I've never driven a five speed NC. I've only had one 5 speed that was a 1.8 (BP-Z3 engine) in a 2004 NB and the box was a delight to use but the engine really did need worked to keep it in the power.

The 1st synchromesh, 2nd~5th dog engagement configuration provides the flexibilty of a close ratio gearset, shifting speed and positive selection of a full racing transmission in addition to easy selection of 1st gear when stationary.Click to expand. What version are we discussing here? There are differences across the Marks. Once moving, 2nd gear is engaged by moving the shift down and over to the factory 1st gear position. This configuration allows the driver to start off in first gear which is in the std factory 5th position on the H-Shift. The standard 5th gear is replaced by a new synchromesh engagement first gear and all of the old 1st~4th gears are moved up to 2nd~5th. For circuit racers who require close ratios with a 1.0 top gear, we have a dog leg style gearset available.
